Sasuke Uchiha is one of the Naruto series’ main characters and Naruto’s best friend. However, their paths diverged shortly after the chunin exams, and they only really reconnected after the end of the 4th Great Shinobi War.

Born to the well-established and revered Uchiha clan, Sasuke seemingly had everything going his way during the early years of his life. But, one day, his older brother, Itachi Uchiha, slaughtered the entire Uchiha clan, sparing only himself and Sasuke. Ultimately, this was the point that changed the path Sasuke’s life would follow into the future.
Since Sasuke’s family had been murdered and his brother fled the Hidden Leaf Village, he has vowed to become stronger to take revenge. This lust for power makes Sasuke leave the Hidden Leaf Village to join forces with Orochimaru as his disciple.
But, although Sasuke left his village behind, he was never truly alone. His friends and teammates, Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno, never gave up on him and did everything in their power to bring him back home. Further, while traveling, he made new friends in the form of Karin, Suigetsu, and Jūgo.
As far as his mentors go, there are three of note:
- Itachi Uchiha
- Kakashi Hatake
- Orochimaru
Itachi was Sasuke’s first real teacher as his elder brother and also his final mentor in death. Kakashi taught Sasuke as a member of Team 7 and saw himself in the young Sasuke. And Orochimaru was the one to help Sasuke fully realize his potential.
Notable Skills
While his only stated affinity is for Lightning release, Sasuke, like most of the Uchiha clan, is also extremely proficient at Fire release. Further, he can use Water, Wind, Earth, and Yin release. But, while he’s known for his Lightning and Fire style jutsu, he’s more known for something else: his visual prowess.
As a member of the Uchiha clan, Sasuke has access to the Sharingan kekkei genkai, one of the Three Great Dōjutsu. Eventually, his Sharingan is upgraded to Mangekyō Sharingan and then to Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan after the death of his brother.
Thanks to this upgraded kekkei genkai, he can use extremely powerful jutsu such as Amaterasu and Susanoo. Finally, one of his eyes was further enhanced to be a Rinnegan, another one of the Three Great Dōjutsu.
With his Rinnegan, Sasuke then gains access to several of the Six Paths Techniques, further increasing his power.
Sasuke has two different summoning pacts along with his ninjutsu and dōjutsu. The first is with the snakes of Ryūchi cave, from which Aoda is his main summon. The second is with an unknown land of hawks, from which he summons Garuda.
And finally, Sasuke is quite proficient with several ninja tools. His shuriken jutsu is one of the best around, and later in the series, he opts to wield a katana imbued with Lightning-style chakra.
Match-Ups
As one of the most powerful ninjas in the world, like Naruto, few match-ups will trouble Sasuke. But, while Naruto’s weaknesses come from his fighting style, Sasuke’s come from his naivety.
Nearly every fight he loses throughout the series is due to him overestimating his powers while underestimating his opponent’s. One notable example of this is when he attempted to capture Killer B, only to nearly die in the process.
As is expected, this naivety also extends to his fights against Naruto, of which he technically lost almost all despite being more skilled. He relied too much on the difference in their skill levels and didn’t consider the fact that having a clear goal is a powerful tool.
But, if Sasuke were to have a lousy match-up based on his skills and abilities alone, it would be against someone very similar to himself. Most opponents can’t deal with the combined might of his dōjutsu, but as we saw, he wasn’t all that effective against either Itachi or Madara.
Team Composition
Sasuke has been a member of only a few teams, mainly Team Kakashi (Team 7) and Hebi/Taka. With Team Kakashi, his role was that of an actual team member, but with Taka, he was the leader and central figure who the others merely supported.
Interestingly enough, Team Kakashi, minus the actual character of Kakashi, might be the best team composition for Sasuke to shine.
Naruto is his unique best pairing, considering together they can use the Six Paths – Chibaku Tensei technique. Further, Sasuke’s Perfect Susanoo can combine with Naruto’s Tailed Beast mode to increase both of their powers.
However, what might be less expected is that Sasuke and Sakura also have a good pairing. Sasuke lacks only two things in his arsenal: physical power and the ability to heal himself. Luckily for him, Sakura has both of those covered.
